Cooper Wise, nominated by Coach Roberta McWoods, is our Athlete of the Day!
Tell us about Cooper’s achievement:
Cooper Wise is a recent 2019 High School graduate who participated in the sports of Football and Track & Field. Cooper will be headed to Cornell University this fall to play football.
Cooper has excelled in the classroom as well as on the gridiron on the track and in the field. He has received numerous awards for those academic as well as athletic accomplishments!
Tell us about a character trait Cooper has that you admire:
This past weekend Cooper participated in the Class 5 State Track & Field Championships. At the end of Cooper’s junior year, he finished 3rd in the State in the triple jump. Last week at the Sectional qualifying meet for State, Cooper injured his knee after winning the high jump, which prevented him from competing in his other events.
One week later, st the State Track & Field Meet, Cooper made the decision to use his less dominant leg in order to compete in the high jump. So Cooper switched his jump foot and ended up becoming an All-State Athlete, placing him 7th in the Missouri State Track & Field Championships.
At the end of the competition all of the coaches that had athletes in that completion, congratulated Cooper for what would be considered an unbelievable feat, to make this change less than 24 hours of competition.
Most athletes would have felt defeated and not even try.
This is an act of resiliency and competitive focus. This also demonstrated Cooper’s growth mindset as he persevered through this adverse situation to accomplish a goal.
Tell us one thing you want your athlete to know:
Cooper needs to know that this was a true test of his character and that he passed it with flying colors! He also needs to know that this was no small feat and this courageous act did not go unnoticed.
